When Breath of the Wild launched in 2017 I genuinely did not think Nintendo could top it. Tears of the Kingdom has made me eat those words with considerable enthusiasm.

The new Ultrahand, Fuse, and Ascend abilities completely transform how you interact with Hyrule. Building a flame-throwing cart to cross a lava field. Fusing a rock to your shield to survive a fall. Ascending through a ceiling to bypass an entire dungeon. These mechanics have an almost infinite creative ceiling and the game never stops surprising you with new applications.

The sky islands add a genuine vertical dimension to exploration that the depths — Hyrule's shadowy underground mirror — complement perfectly. The world feels three times the size of Breath of the Wild without ever feeling padded.

The temples are a massive improvement on Breath of the Wild's Divine Beasts. Each has a distinct identity, enemy set, and puzzle philosophy. The Fire Temple in particular is one of the best designed dungeons in Zelda history.

Where the game loses a point is in its story delivery. The Dragon's Tears memories are stunning individually but the non-linear way you collect them undermines their emotional impact. The ending, when it comes, hit me hard — but the road there is muddier than it should be for a Zelda narrative.

The Verdict

A creative masterpiece. Tears of the Kingdom doesn't just build on Breath of the Wild — it redefines what open-world games can be.
